Panchakarma
Panchakarma is an elegant cleansing process that releases toxins and
restores balance of mind and body. It detoxifies the body and strengthens
the immune system. Ayurveda believes that good health depends upon good
digesting power and a cheerful mind.
Toxins start to generate and accumulate in the tissues of our body when
we can’t digest our food, experience, and emotions that lead to
imbalance and then diseases.
These accumulated toxins (ama) block the flow of energy and nourishment
throughout the system. Panchakarma eliminates these toxins through proper
channels.
In Sanskrit Pancha means five and Karma means action referring to the
five different cleansing procedures described in classic Ayurvedic texts.
1.Vaman- Herb induced emesis
2.Virechan- herb induced Purgation
3.Niruha Basti- herbal decoction enema
4.Anuvasan Basti – herbalized oil enema
5.Nasya – Nasal administration of
herbal oils.
At Beayurvedic center these steps are followed:
Consultation with Dr. Beena Vesikar (M.D. Ayurveda)
Step One- Pre purificatory procedure-
This step prepares your body for the detoxification process and mobilizes
accumulated toxins towards proper releasing channels. Panchakarma begins
with Oleation that is ingestion of herbal ghee/oils and soothing massages
with herbalized oils specific to your dosha type.
During oleation period, Swedan (herbalized steam that generates sweat) is
given to whole body. Steam opens body’s circulatory channels and
allows the toxins to flow from the tissue to the G.I. tract for
elimination. It relaxes the body and allows the impurities to be
eliminated through sweat glands.
Step two- Purificatory procedure-
Once the toxins have been mobilized, depending upon your dosha imbalance
you may be advised to do one of the purificatory procedures to facilitate
the elimination of accumulated toxins. Virechan (herb induced purgation),
Basti (herbal oil/decoction enemas), Nasya (nasal administration of
herbal oils/ghee) help to release the toxins from the body and improve
the flow of life energy.
Virechan-

Virechan is herb-induced purgation. This is a therapy of choice to
eliminate excess Pitta from the body. Medicated herbs are given at bedtime and the results
are observed the following morning. Few loose motions are sufficient for
complete cleansing.
Virechan is effective in pitta disorders, hemorrhoids, skin problems like
acne, rashes, inflammatory skin disorders, hepatitis, abdominal pain
related to indigestion, worms, gout, rosaseacea, urinary tract diseases,
constipation, psoriasis, Herpes, gynecological disorders, Diabetes,

Basti (Enema) is considered as the most important of all Panchakarma
treatments. It cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the 3 doshas,
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, through the colon. Basti is also highly
beneficial as a rejuvenating treatment. Medicated oil or ghee and an
herbal decoction are given as enema to clean the colon and increase the
muscle tone. This procedure is usually applied for 8 to 30 days, based on
the medical condition of a person.Basti cleanses large intestine and
eliminates excess vata.
In this procedure, herbal decoctions and oils are introduced into large
intestine with the help of enema bag.
Niruha basti- are those using less oil and
more detoxifying herbs. These are indicated in diseases of Vata due to
obstruction in the channels. It is effective in conditions of pain in
abdomen, chest, pelvic region, eyes, ears or legs, cardiac pain,
hemiplegia or facial paralysis. In this procedure, usually Dahsamool
decoction is the main ingredient as it has the power to remove vata that
is blocking the channels and causing pain.
Anuvasan Basti- these enemas have more
nutritive property. They are generally given in conditions of wasting and
debilitating vata diseases.
Basti Benefits Hemiplegia, Paraplegia, Colitis, Cervical Spondylitis,
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Constipation, Digestive disorders, Backache,

Nose is the doorway to the head. Nasya karma is one of the Panchakarma
procedures in which the medicated ghee, or oil is administered through
nostrils.
This session involves a brief facial massage with warm fomentation over
the sinus areas. This helps to liquefy the doshas. Medicated oil or ghee
is then administered from the lateral part of the nostril.

the channels of the head and improves the oxygenation (prana), which
has a direct influence on brain.

graying of hair and beard.
