According to sushrut samhita there are 107 marma (vital points) in the human body. Marma refer to the meeting of five organic principles- muscles, vessels, ligaments, bones and joints. These are the junctions of Life force or Prana.At these junctions the arteries, veins, lymph’s and nerves enter the organ to carry nutrients. Massage to these marma points provides specific help to the seven bodily tissues (dhatus) releases pain and aches in the specific areas and is as a therapeutic massage.
Massage Oils-
Several types of oils are used in massage, keeping in mind t the aggravated doshas of a person.
Base oils like Organic – sesame oil, coconut oil, almond oil, Olive oil, Ghee, castor oil
Many herbal oils like Bala ashwagandha oil, sahacharadi oil, eladi oil and many more are used according to the need to balance the doshas.

Massage with dry herbs.
Udvartan is an exfoliating herbal paste massaged over the body only in the upward direction. In Sanskrit language “Ud” means to go up and vartana means upward moving . All systems are involved in this therapy especially Rasavaha (lymphatic), Swedavaha (sweat carrying) and Ambuvaha (water regulating) systems. All five major vayus are stimulated during udvatan. Udvartan is done after abhanga (whole body oil massage). It is beneficial for all body types and is usually followed by steam (swedan).

Heated stone massage is a form of swedan chikitsa or thermo therapy, a modality used during Panchakarma therapy.
The session starts with whole body herbal oil massage and then followed hot stone massage.
Heated stones are wrapped in herbs, in a warm moist cloth, creating a poultice and then rubbed all over the body creating a sensation of warmth and comfort. Stone helps to penetrate the oil deep in the tissue, opening the pores and relaxing the tissue making it more receptive.

Charaka samhita mentions swedan as” whatever relieves stiffness, heaviness and cold in the body and produces sweat”
Sweating helps to liquefy the dosha, making it easier to flow out of the system.
Swedan is always given after abhyanga.

Pinda means poultice and sweda means to sweat.
This is a unique and therapeutic process in Ayurveda.
The whole body is initially massaged with herbal oil selected according to one’s body constitution. Followed by scrubbing by boluses (prepared from rice and herbs cooked in milk) over the entire body using specific strokes. These boluses are dipped in warm herbal decoction and scrubbed over the body for a certain period. This penetrates deep in the muscle tissue giving strength and firmness.

SHIRODHARA is the traditional Ayurvedic therapy that balances the mind body and consciousness. In Sanskrit language shirodhara is composed of two words Shiro means head and dhara means flow. It is the continuous warm oil/decoction/medicated milk/medicated buttermilk flow gently poured onto the forehead for an extended period of time
The individual lies supine on the Droni (massage table) with head back and rolled towel or pillow beneath the neck. Oil is poured slowly in a steady stream from a traditional copper bowl on the forehead for 30- 45 minutes. The oil/milk/buttermilk flows down nourishing the hair and scalp region and is collected in a bowl kept below the Droni. This period of 30 - 45 minutes can be extended or shortened according to the severity of symptoms. Soothing music or mantras are advisable and this effect is indescribable.

Netra is eyes and Tarpan is to nourish.
The therapy aims to provide optimum nourishment and rejuvenation to the eyes.
The dough made from urad flour is made around the eyes in such a way that it has the appearance like a dam. Ghee is poured in this groove from lateral side when the eyes are closed. The eyes are soaked in ghee for couple of minutes. Slowly eye movements, lateral upward, downward medial are performed. Eyes are opened and closed for several times.
This helps to hydrate nourish, moisturize relax the eyes.
